Sophia Evans

Sophia Evans, 101, of Appleton, WI, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Oakridge Gardens in Appleton.

Sophia was born March 24, 1922 in Brandon, WI. She lived in Waupun for sometime before moving back to Brandon. Sophia graduated from Brandon High School and then UW Oshkosh and received a degree in elementary education. Sophia married H. Dustin Evans in 1942 and raised two children, Dustin and Gail while teaching grades 1-8 in two one-room schools in the Brandon area. For a time the family lived in California and Wyoming before returning to Wisconsin where Sophia resumed a career teaching for the Alto and later Appleton school districts. Sophia remained an avid reader from the time she was a child, still recalling the first book she checked out from the Waupun Public Library. With her husband she enjoyed golfing, traveling, and spending time on their boat. After her husband’s death in 1984 she traveled both abroad and throughout the U.S., often with her daughter, Gail. Sophia was a long-time member of First English Church in Appleton where she served on various committees.

Sophia is survived by her son, Dustin R. (Joan) Evans; half-brother, Robert (Janet) Henken; and step-sister, Ruth Buwalda.

Sophia was preceded in death by her husband, H. Dustin; daughter, Gail; her mother and step-father, Cora and Winnard Vant Hoff; half-brother, Bill (Delores) Henken; and her beloved maternal grandparents: Arie and Johanna Vermeer who gave her unconditional love and care throughout her childhood and life.

Funeral services for Sophia Evans will be held Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun with Pastor Mary Bauer officiating. Burial will follow at Brandon Cemetery where she will be buried beside her husband and daughter. Friends and relatives may call on the family on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
