Michael Schmuhl, a devoted family man and cherished member of the Brandon community, passed away on August 31, 2024 in Brandon at the age of 45 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 19, 1978, in Ripon, WI, Mike grew up with a passion for the outdoors and a deep love for his family.
Michael was a proud graduate of Laconia High School in 1997, and continued his education at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where he earned a degree in business with a minor in finance. This education laid the foundation for a successful career in the auto industry, where he worked for several years in various capacities, including as a part owner of Homan’s in Ripon and later in the purchasing department at Mercury Marine.
Michael's life was forever changed when he met his beloved wife, Suzie Watring at Noah's Ark Waterpark, where they both worked during the summer. The couple was married on August 19, 2006 in Wisconsin Dells. They were married 18 wonderful years, during which they welcomed four children: Mason, Brayden, Everley, and Brooks. Michael was incredibly proud to be their father, exemplifying what it meant to be both a mentor and a friend to them.
Mike was known for his infectious enthusiasm for outdoor activities. He was a huge fan of camping, often spending time with his family at Peninsula State Park and traveling out west to visit national parks. His passion for fishing was passed down through generations, fostering a love for the great outdoors within his family. He dedicated time to coaching his children's basketball teams, earning the affectionate title of "Coach Mike." His commitment to attending every one of their games demonstrated his unwavering support and dedication. Mike also instilled his love for hunting in his children, taking them on numerous hunting trips to Mt. Horeb over the years.
Among Michael's cherished memories this past year was a community-organized hunting trip that allowed him to experience the joy of elk hunting in Colorado with his children.
Michael is survived by his wife, Suzie, and their four children: Mason, Brayden, Everley, and Brooks. He is also lovingly remembered by his father, Jerry (Deborah) Schmuhl and Mother, Bev Hanefeld. He leaves behind his siblings: Bob Schaeve, Matt (Gwen) Schaeve, and Nina (Nick) Malm; mother-in-law, Sue Watring; grandmother-in-law, Genevieve Watring; brother-in-law, Brett (Rachel) Watring; sister-in-law, Brittany (Matt) Femal, Allysa (Cale) Cooper; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Michael was preceded in death by his stepdad, Steven "Huck" Hanefeld; and father-in-law, Burton Watring.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, fondly remembered for his generous spirit, zest for life, and unwavering love for his family. Michael Schmuhl's legacy will live on through the countless memories he created and the profound impact he had on those who were fortunate enough to know him.
