Lowell J. Bruins, 88, of Alto, passed away Friday, September 28, 2018 at the Christian Home in Waupun.

Lowell was born January 29, 1930 in Fond du Lac, WI the son of John H. and Henrietta (Vande Zande) Bruins. Lowell completed high school and a year of college. On November 6, 1950 he enlisted in the Navy at the beginning of the Korean War. He was assigned to the USS Columbus, and was in Boston, Cuba Naval Yard, and the Mediterranean Sea. Before being discharged on August 31, 1954 as GM3/c he saw a lot of the world, the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and many other ports. On June 2, 1954 he married Marjorie Mae Broadway at Alto Christian Reformed Church. Lowell was an active and faithful member of Alto Reformed Church. Lowell worked at Gysbers Grocery Store for 43 years, was a custodian at Alto Dairy for 6 years, but found his passion in serving as a hospice bereavement volunteer. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Marge.

Lowell is survived by his three children: Jeffrey (Pam) Bruins of Waupun, Valerie (Jeff) Bergeman of Mason, WI, and Janell (Ron) Nielsen of Elkhart Lake, WI; grandchildren: Ethan (Beth) Vaade, Erin (Michael) Potts, Alex (Grace) Bruins, Elizabeth Nelson, and Thomas Bruins; great-grandchildren: Norah and Asher Vaade, Elena and Mathias Potts, Case Bruins, and Sutton, Lakynn, and Reeve Nelson; two step-grandchildren: Brad (Steph) Nielsen, Becky Nielsen, Nikki (Joe) Thielmann, and Don, Doug, and Jordan Bergeman; step-great-grandchildren: Cora and Madelyn Nielsen and Mason Thielmann; a sister, Gretchen London of Katy, TX; sisters-in-law: Julene Mulder and Julia Broadway of Waupun, and Beverly (Pat) Van Dyken of Palos Park, IL; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lowell was preceded in death by his wife, Marge on August 9, 2012; a brother, Delton Bruins; a sister, Catherine Williams; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Lee A. Williams, Jack London, Lucille and Allen Klumpers, Hilda and Roger Vande Zande, Gerald Mulder, Kenneth Broadway Sr., and Allen Van Dyken.



Friends and relatives may call on the family on Tuesday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service.


Funeral services for Lowell J. Bruins will be held Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Alto Reformed Church with Rev. Kevin Van Wyk and Rev. Dennis Overlien officiating.



Burial will follow at Alto Cemetery.
