Glen B. Smit, 80, of Waupun, died Thursday, March 23, 2017 at The Christian Home & Rehabilitation Center in Waupun.
Glen was born August 3, 1936 in Waupun the son of Gerrit and Belle Sloper Smit. Glen was a 1955 graduate of Rosendale High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. On February 24, 1962 he married Janet Lang in Fairwater. Following their marriage the couple resided in Eldorado. Glen was employed at Giddings & Lewis in Fond du Lac for over 30 years where he served as a union steward and then retired. He enjoyed playing softball and was known as “The Hummer” for his pitching. He enjoyed camping, bonfires, was an avid hunter, fisherman and bowler.
Glen is survived by his children: Dan (Therese) Smit of St. Cloud, Jim (Karen) Smit of Hartford, Terry (Todd) Hummelmeier of Waupun, Tracy (Matt) McDowell of Waupun, and Tyler Smit of Brandon; eight grandchildren: Brittney Smit, Brant (Taylor) McDowell, Brady McDowell, Lindsey Hummelmeier and fiancee Zachary Vande Kolk, and Adam, Cole, and Clara Hummelmeier; a great-grandchild, Kaiden Smit; three sisters: Lorene (Ray) Jahns of Brandon, Carol (Dave) Jepson of Oshkosh, and Linda (Jerry) Karls of Fond du Lac; a brother, Gene (Alice) Smit of Albuquerque, NM; a sister-in-law, Mary Smit of Fond du Lac; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, in 1984; two brothers: Randy and Roy Smit; and a sister, Hazel Smit.
Friends and relatives may call on the family on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Funeral services for Glen Smit will be held Monday, March 27, 2017 at 12 p.m. at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun with Rev. Shari Routh officiating.
Burial will follow at
Estabrooks Cemetery
in Fond du Lac.
